The Welch family lived in southeastern Virginia, in the early 1800's.  William Welch and his son Tilden are shown in the 1850 census of Wythe County working as farm laborers.  Although it appears that the family had been in this part of Virginia for several years, the ancestry of William Welch is unknown.
